EP3: What is Consciousness? - Part 2
In this episode, Joshua Dorfman delves into the concept of individual consciousness, exploring the internal processes that shape our perceptions and experiences. He focuses on how memories, assumptions, expectations, and visualization interact to create our subjective reality.
Key Takeaways:
Visualization plays a crucial role in how we perceive and experience the world. Our imaginations can create powerful emotions, so it's important to be mindful of our thoughts and the stories we tell ourselves.
Joshua explains why it's crucial to focus on the present, rather than dwelling on past traumas or worrying about the future.

Joshua Dorfman::Yes, yes! Greetings. My name is Joshua Dorfman. You are listening to The Traveling Temple. This episode is part two to "What is Consciousness." In part one, we spoke about individual consciousness as a home for your beliefs, your opinions, your thoughts, your emotions, and any external or outside information that you would take in. In this episode, I want to elaborate further and actually bring into our awareness insight into our internal processes that contribute to our individual consciousness. And so what do I mean by internal processes? Well, memory, assumption, expectation, visualization. So visualization is basically the key component here because visualization is a main part of what is being used when we are Remembering something when we are thinking about something, when we're imagining something, when you're remembering something, let's say you're remembering an old birthday party or an old conversation, you're more than likely visualizing as well as hearing what took place at that time.
Joshua Dorfman::Assumptions and expectations are definitely a catalyst for the usage of your imagination. The usage of your visualizing capability. Because when you assume something or expect something, you are imagining a future outcome. In other words, you're imagining something that hasn't happened yet. But it's happening in your mind. It can also happen emotionally because what you are imagining in your mind creates an emotional response. Now, feelings, and I'm seeing, oh my god, I'm feeling something, I'm seeing it, makes it seem real. So we just need to be clear that whatever we, not everything that we're imagining is real. Not everything that you're imagining has happened yet, okay?
Joshua Dorfman::So it's something to be mindful of. Because what you believe is real goes into your consciousness. And it becomes a part of your perception. It is also gonna play into how you are in regard to your personality, how you might respond to situations, etc. For example, let's say your partner, significant other, doesn't respond to you quickly. And all of a sudden you're like, why isn't this person responding to me? Where are they? What's happening? And let's say you start to imagine the worst case scenario. Forget about it. We've all been there. So, you're imagining the worst case scenario. You're going down that rabbit hole. All these emotions are coming up.
Joshua Dorfman::You're upset. You're sad. You're raging. Now you're planning your defense. You're planning what you're gonna say. You might even have gone as far as planning your, the end of this relationship. And guess what? It hasn't happened yet. But it became your reality because you were imagining it, thinking about it, and then had emotions, and it felt real. When we're imagining something in the future that hasn't happened yet, we must understand that we're imagining that thing in the present moment. And the present moment, is the only thing that is real. What is in the now? We can bring future into the now by use of the imagination, but that doesn't mean it's real because it hasn't happened yet.
Joshua Dorfman::Now, the same thing goes with memories goes with the past. The past has already happened. It's gone. But in the present moment, you're remembering something. So let's say you are remembering a traumatic experience, and you spend a lot of time bringing your awareness toward remembering that traumatic experience. What's actually happening is, you're actually reliving that experience by Continuing to remember and replay that traumatic experience and by reliving it, those emotions, right, what you felt at that time, they come up and guess what? It feels real again. All of a sudden, you feel unsafe. All of a sudden, you feel like you're in danger.
Joshua Dorfman::All of a sudden, you feel like you have to survive or you might jump into a survival mode. End. In reality, in the moment, in the now, you actually might be totally fine, totally safe, literally where you're at physically and in a completely different point in your life. It could have been 10, 15, 20, let's just say many years since that's happened. And since you've even felt the way that you felt at that time, yet the reliving of it, bringing the past back into the moment makes you, Feel the way you did back then. And if we're not careful, if you're not careful, now, that feeling is going into your consciousness and it could reprogram, reshape your consciousness and all of a sudden, your perspective changes and you start to live in the now.
Joshua Dorfman::Feeling unsafe or feeling in danger, feeling the way you did all those years ago. I think this is a perfect moment to take a deep inhale and a slow exhale because hearing that may have changed you. cause you to remember some things or imagine some things. And I want to make sure that you come back to center and are grounded. Remember, what hasn't happened yet, hasn't happened yet. So, there's really nothing to prepare for. There's nothing to be guarded for. Because nothing has happened yet.
Joshua Dorfman::And when you're revisiting the past, remember that that has already happened. You don't need to change who you are in this moment because of what happened. Unless, when revisiting something from the past, you learn something about yourself that could use some positive change. That's different, and that's a different episode. For now, consciousness, remember, is your home. And it's the home for who you are, it's home for your beliefs, what you imagine, your opinions. And all the information that you take in and that you create within yourself. And as you undergo this process, what kind of positive changes can you make, can you implement into your habits, into your day to day, and into the things you are taking in that can help you feel better, that can help change your health for the better.
Joshua Dorfman::And so, what I want to leave you here with is that you have power over where you direct your awareness. In your imagination and in reality. In your memory, and therefore you have the power to create positivity, motivation, inspiration, and anything else and all good things into your consciousness. And this is how you create your reality. I'll leave you with that. I am here for you. And it is my honor to do so. So I do invite you to ask me questions or list any topics that you would like me to speak on. And I will do my best to incorporate answers in future episodes. If you'd like to learn more about me, you can visit my website at joshuadorfman.com.
